IPSentry Overview

IPSentry software is a Windows 95/98/NT/2000 enterprise-class network device monitoring application for IT Professionals who demand 24x7 up-time of devices on their local and global networks.

With IPSentry you can monitor TCP/IP computers and devices anywhere in the world.  You can monitor disk space levels, NT Services, and with an appropriate Add-In, just about anything else you need to monitor.

We have incorporated into IPSentry a substantial array of alerting options to help you ensure that somebody, somewhere is made aware of problems within seconds of detection.

TCP/IP Device Monitoring
IPSentry does much more than simple "ping" tests on network devices.   Rather, IPSentry performs various RFC compliant requests depending on the protocol requirements for the service being monitored.

For example: instead of simply pinging or just connecting to port 80 on a web server, IPSentry will actually request the specified page and analyze the incoming data for the user defined query text.  If the text specified by the configuration is unavailable, various alerts will be triggered.

IPSentry offers an Auto Configure option for many of the standard protocols such as HTTP, SMTP, POP3, NNTP, and FTP.   You can use the defaults or modify them to meet your specific requirements.

Drive Space Monitoring
IPSentry drive space monitoring monitors more than just local drives (C:, D:, etc..).   With IPSentry, you can configure the drive space monitor to check network shares using the standard UNC ( \\myserver\myshare ) combined with Username and Password configuration.  *IPSentry requires one free drive letter for localized mapping.

NT Service Monitoring
If you are running on an NT network, or even a single NT machine - you have most likely encountered a system service just stopping.  Fortunately, IPSentry offers the ability to monitor NT System Services and report immediately if the service is not in Running state.  Enable and configure NT Remote Administration, and you can monitor services anywhere on your network from a single location.

Add-Ins
IPSentry utilizes 3 types of Add-Ins.  Any single Add-In may or may not provide services for 1 or all 3 types.

Menu Based: These Add-Ins can be either full blown applications that you add to the Add-In menu option on the Active Display, or they may customized components that conform to the IPSentry Add-In Development Specification (IADS).  These components can be report generators, log analyzers, etc...  Anything that users of IPSentry may find beneficial to be accessible from the Active Display Menu.  Unfortunately, as of this writing, the IADS Documentation is currently under development (October 31, 1998)

Monitoring: These Add-Ins are customized components that conform to the IPSentry Add-In Development Specification (IADS).  These components allow almost limitless possibilities to the monitoring options within IPSentry.  Obviously, a single application can not handle every single requirement of network monitoring.  With Monitoring Add-Ins, developers can create components that will fulfill that need. (I.e. Perhaps you want to monitor the size of a given file, a VERY simple add-in could be developed to monitor the size of a file and return alert information if the size has or has not been reached.)

Alert/Notification: These Add-Ins are customized components that conform to the IPSentry Add-In Development Specification (IADS).  These components allow almost limitless possibilities to the notification options within IPSentry.  Obviously, a single application can not handle every single notification possibility.  With Alert Add-Ins, developers can create components that will fulfill that need. (I.e. Perhaps you have the File-size add-in running, and you want to rename the file or move it to another location - an Alert Add-In could be easily developed to perform this task.)

The IPSentry Help System
This help system is organized much the same way as the application itself.  The intent of this documentation is to provide a little additional detail on what goes where and what means what.

You will find that the topics and contents tend to be organized in the order of the steps you might have taken to get to the problem point.  The general application contents help pages contain both the options selected to get to a specific location as well as an image of the screen itself.  Within the help content page will be additional information on each control (field, button, etc.) on that screen.
