IPSentry - Alert and Notification Options
When adding or modifying a device to monitor, you will be presented with the IPSentry Machine Options Editor which contains various selections required to define the item being monitored.
From this area, you will be selecting the type of monitored item as well as the various alert and notification options specific to the entry.
This section covers the various alert and notification options available under IPSentry. The various notification and alert features can be found under one of 7 tabs on the Machine Options Editor window and are as follows:
Audible Alert
Provides audible notification that a problem has been encountered on a
specific monitored item. You can configure the type of sound (.WAV file or
Speaker Beep) as well as select a custom .WAV file for the alert.
This alert is ideal for manned installations where a human will be able to
hear and respond to the alert immediately.
Pager
Notification
The pager notification is by far the most complex notification option
available within IPSentry. This area provides both modem based paging
through various configuration as well as email alerts to be included in the
escalation schedule.
While pager configuration is complex, the most basic options are quite
simple to configure and from there, one can surmise the enhanced
capabilities based on need.
Email
Notification
Sends an email message via standard SMTP to through the select relay host to
the specified address or addresses.
Launch
Application
Executes an external application or utility. This feature comes in
handy when an external alert option or utility can be used to recover from a
failure.
For example, the SHUTDOWN.EXE shipped with the NT Resource kit can be used
to restart a system in needed.
X10 Control
This feature provides you with the ability to control external power control
modules (X10 Modules) based on the results of an alert. This is ideal
for activating sirens, alarm lights, and other devices available on your
local AC power circuit. ( see: http://www.x10usa.com
for information on the X10 power control system )
Syslog
Messaging
Provides the ability of logging results and sending alerts to a remote
syslog daemon on your network.
Add-In Alert
Provides access to setup and configuration of add-in components built around
the IPSentry Add-In Specification. This feature allows for a-la-carte
inclusion of specialized alert and notification options through 3rd party
and in-house developed add-in components. (See The IPSentry SDK
documentation for information on developing your own notification and
alerting components.)
